Ansonborough Charleston Real Estate

Ansonborough was Charleston’s first neighborhood. It was laid out in 1745-46 for Captain George Anson. Captain Anson was titled Baron Anson after seizing a Spanish treasure fleet. Later he became First Lord of the Admiralty. Much of the neighborhood was destroyed in a fire in 1838 and had to be rebuilt. Many of the rebuilt houses adopted Greek Revival characteristics.

Just to the east of’ Ansonborough, are luxury condominiums Anson House and Laurens Place. You will also see the Charleston Maritime Center, the South Carolina Aquarium and the future home of a state of the art cruise terminal.  Watch as the Waterfront corridor is developed and refined.

Insider Tip:
Take every opportunity to walk to the riverside for great views of the water and of the Ravenel Bridge. You’ll see why ‘The Port City” is one of Charleston’s nicknames. On your way there, be sure to check out the crumbling facade of the Old Bennett Rice Mill and when you return, stop by Ted’s Butcherblock, our favorite neighborhood butcher shop and gourmet market.
