With the surplus of new buyers to the Charleston area, new developments are being built in the surrounding areas. To the west of James Island is Johns Island, the largest island in SC. It is separated from the mainland by the tidal Stono River, which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Originally a farming community, the island’s history dates back centuries as the site of several prominent plantations, producing much of the area’s rice, indigo, and cotton exports. Farming still exists today, and with the rise in popularity of local fruits, meats, and vegetables the island has experienced a rebirth in this historic function.
On Johns Island, you can enjoy a brand new home, while embracing the rural lifestyle that includes appreciation of both history and nature. With its close proximity to downtown Charleston, airport, Folly Beach, and Kiawah Island, this is a PRIME location with Lowcountry charm, open concepts, green space, and eco-friendly features. Get more BANG for your buck!

More new construction on the Westside in Charleston
In June we wrote about some fantastic new construction going up around downtown Charleston in the Westside and other areas north of the Crosstown. With 15 Ashton Street nearing completion, dunes properties agent Kristin Walker and Ecovest have 3 more projects on Ashton Street, two of which are historic restorations, and another that is new construction.
1 and 3 Ashton Street are historic restorations, with construction at #1 already underway. This will be an exquisite renovation and restoration to City of Charleston BAR standards of an historic Charleston Cottage in the Westside neighborhood. The house will include 1 bedroom, along with an additional office/sunroom with high-end finishes. Estimated completion time is December 2014. 3 Ashton Street, right next door, will also be restored, with permitting approvals pending.
29 Ashton Street has a December 2014 completion date and is new construction that will have 3 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. This property will feature an open floor plan, covered front piazza, high-end finishes, and second floor piazza. Another great addition will be off-street parking for two is in a private driveway.
These properties on Ashton Street are located “in an area of the Westside neighborhood poised for radical transformation – including three historic restorations, two new homes, and a +/- 60,000 sq ft residential development at the intersection of the Crosstown, Norman and Spring Street,” according to the listing agent, Kristin Walker.
