Originally from New York, Greg has called Charleston his home for many years now. A graduate of College of Charleston, Greg is an expert on downtown Charleston and will be working out of our Real Estate Studio. His background is in finance and investments.
Where is your favorite restaurant in Charleston and what do you recommend there? Edmunds Oast and the Fresh Charcuterie Board.
Have you read any good books lately? I recently read Boomerang by Michael Lewis and really enjoyed it. It gives a great perspective on other countries and how they were impacted during the recession.
Susan is South Carolina born and raised. In the south, there is a commonly used acronym…GRITS…”Girls Raised in the South” or perhaps men might say it stands for “Gentlemen Raised in the South”. Since she was a skinny little 2 year old, she often visited the coast for family vacations. It has always been a lifelong dream of hers to live near the coast. In 2005, that dream was met when she moved to Hilton Head. In 2015, she then moved to Mt Pleasant to be nearer her family and the Charleston coast. Because living near the coast of South Carolina has been a dream come true, her goal is to help make that dream a reality for others who share in the dream of living on or near the coast. There is nothing finer than to live in South Carolina…just ask any GRITS.
Where is your favorite restaurant in Charleston? I have two favorites: Burton’s Grill in Mt Pleasant and Long Island Cafe on Isle of Palms. What do you recommend there? Everything! They both have a fabulous menu of scratch made, locally inspired foods of fresh ingredients.
What is your favorite activity? Taking my grandchildren to the beach to play in the sand and waves.

Do you have any pets and if so, what are their names? Two years ago I adopted an adorable Schnauzer via the SPCA in Orangeburg, SC. He was skin and bones when the county dog catcher picked him up, but I saw his potential when I spotted his photo on PetFinder.com. I decided to name him Walker, not because he and I love to walk together, but because The Church of the Cross in Bluffton, SC has a pipe organ that was made by JW Walker & Sons, Pipe Organ Builders of England. While living in Bluffton, I sang in the church choir. I love music of all types but especially praise and worship songs. For that reason, I thought it would be nice to name my “fur baby” after one of my favorite musical instruments.
I was reading this article recently that was on marketwatch.com about how being a nosy neighbor and going to open houses near your home can help you out in the long run.
I immediately thought of my mother in law in New Jersey who recently admitted attending a party so she could “see what they’ve done to the house” and hits almost every open house in her neighborhood. My husband and I sort of laughed at her fondly for that. But after reading this article, she’s a smart cookie apparently.
According to the article, attending nearby open houses is smart if you’re putting your home on the market soon, but also smart if you’re planning on staying for awhile. The article points out that those homes are going to be your home’s competition.
Take a look at what has and hasn’t been upgraded and make comparisons to your own home and be aware of where your home “falls short.” Their upgrades may help you prioritize your own. You should also be aware of not over improving your home, though because you want to make sure you get a good return on your investment. Seeing what your neighbors are doing can help you make those decisions.
As for the reason my mother in law goes- to see the furnishings and layouts in spaces that are similar to yours- that’s a good thing to see to0. You can possibly steal some decorating ideas.
Another benefit of attending those local open houses- meet the real estate agents and start forging a relationship early so when the time does come to sell, you’ll have someone to work with you are comfortable with and who you know is familiar with your market.
Many people don’t realize that your local real estate agents love to chat with you- even if you are not selling or buying a home right now or in the near future. Your local agent is a font of information. They work with area vendors everyday and have great recommendations for- minor repairs, plumbers, HVAC repair, painters, decorators, lawn care, irrigation systems, cleaners, pressure washers, you name it, they probably know a reputable, trustworthy person to refer you to.
So what are you waiting for? Before or after taking in a Spoleto event, go visit some local open houses, be inspired and start a new relationship with your local real estate agent.
