One of the first planned communities outside the city, Riverland Terrance on James Island, is minutes to Folly Beach or Downtown Charleston. The Historic American Revolution Fort Pemberton is in the Riverland Terrance neighborhood and features a lovely walking trail. It is also walking distance of the local theater and restaurants. Nearby Medway Park is host to a seasonal farmers market, and hiking and biking trails are popular at nearby James Island County Park.
