Mount Pleasant’s town planners have worked diligently to preserve the town’s rich heritage and small-town appeal, while allowing it to gain all the positive attributes of a much larger city.

Mount Pleasant was voted a top 10 All America City by the National Civic League in 2010. Few Southern towns of its size offer such a diverse nature. Mount Pleasant residents can enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream soda at the Pitt Street Pharmacy in the Old Village, sip a piping hot cappuccino in Towne Center, and end the day chatting over cocktails dockside at one of Shem Creek’s many waterfront restaurants.

Mount Pleasant now boasts a population of around 60,000 people and spreads out over 50 square miles. The town has a great selection of neighborhoods with amenities, what some consider the best public schools in Charleston County, and a close proximity to downtown Charleston and the beaches. In fact, Mount Pleasant is Charleston’s only access to the barrier islands of Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms.

Mount Pleasant is the best of both worlds. With its historic Old Village and a concentration on preserving the region’s Gullah culture, Mount Pleasant is deeply rooted in a rich past. However, a wide array of residential choices and all the modern-day conveniences and amenities of one of the fastest growing cities in South Carolina make Mount Pleasant a city looking to the future.
