Date Ideas for James Island Couples

Date Ideas for James Island Couples

Don’t let everyday stress get to you and your partner — get out and about in your own ’hood and get refreshed! From day dates outside to late, groovin’ nights, there’s a lot you can do in James Island that’ll have you and your significant other forgetting your troubles in no time. Here are a few ideas:

Looking for a great day date?  We suggest:

  1. Wild Blue Ropes

Feeling adventurous? Head to Wild Blue Ropes for some scary good fun with its high-climbing ropes course. WBR is not only known for its team building courses for corporate clients, but also its Couples Climb, which is $50 a pair.

  1. James Island

    @jiclumbingwall

    James Island County Park

What CAN’T you do at James Island County Park? We recommend the climbing wall to really get you out of your head, but if it’s hot outside and you’re in the mood to relax, head to Splash Zone Waterpark. If it’s closed, check out the pedal boat and kayak rentals.  You can even bring Fido so the whole family can enjoy the fresh air at the best dog park in Charleston.

  1. Brewery Hop

Yes, James Island has not one, but two breweries now! Go have some fun with a brewery tasting at Low Tide Brewing and Tradesmen Brewing. Low Tide also offers fun events from time to time, like live music, Pints and Painting nights, and more, while Tradesman Brewing is known for its Bendy Brewski Yoga in addition to Hot Dogs and Pints happy hours.

For the more traditional late date:

  1. James Island

    @x_elle_nt

    Terrace Theater + Zia

Dinner and a movie is still the perfect date night, after all these years. Located on Maybank Highway, Zia is a cool little Tex-Mex spot with a delicious margarita menu and some of the city’s most talked-about quesadillas. Go early and then head next door to the Terrace Theater, which is Charleston’s art house theater. Featuring independent films you won’t find at a blockbuster cinema, the Terrace also serves beer, wine, and nifty snacks — if you’re still hungry!

  1. Pour House + The Lot

There’s a lot to do in this little corner of James Island. Located across the street from the Terrace (and near Riverland Terrace neighborhood), the Pour House is one of Charleston’s most prominent music venues. There’s music here every day of the week: free shows on the back deck at 6:30 p.m. and regional and national/international acts — all genres, like Charles Bradley, Of Montreal, Blackalicious, Sturgill Simpson — on the inside stage later on. On Sundays, there’s an all-day Sunday Brunch Farmer’s Market out back while a soul/gospel band plays on the deck stage. They serve Cuban-fused food at the Pour House via their own food truck attached to the deck as well as next door at the Lot, a renowned farm-to-table restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.

  1. James Island

    @finleyanne9

    Charleston Performing Arts Center + Stereo 8

Stereo 8 is relatively new to the island. It’s known for being themed around music, which is why local artists perform there on the patio every week. The menu is varied and includes duck confit, pad thai, a burger, tacos, and ramen. In the mood for a musical? Located on Folly Road — not far from the restaurant — the Charleston Performing Arts Center presents stage productions performed by mostly locals, like the recent Dreamgirls,The Revue. Disco, “a celebration of those boogie nights and moves that gave us all Saturday Night Fever,” will run until Oct. 23 and will be followed by Holiday Cabaret, just in time for Christmas.

Dog Days of…Spring!

We’ve reached the 70’s! I have packed away the sweaters and I am ready for spring, how about you?

MY favorite thing about the beginning of spring is it’s time to frolic with the dogs!  There’s no better excuse to get some fun and some exercise than taking a walk with your four legged friend near or on the beach.* The sun is shining down, the water has a chill but it’s fine for wading in bare feet. Everyone is cheerful because they know winter is near its end, the daffodils are already in bloom as are camelias.  Windows are open for some fresh air. Charleston is new again!

But back to the dogs. I’ve just got two cats right now and any cat owner can attest they just are not the type of animals you can put a leash on and hit the outdoors for some air and exercise.  However,  I am a lucky aunt to many a friends’ dogs and I take every opportunity I can to whisk them away for warm weather adventures.  There is a lowkey little “Bark Park” on the Isle of Palms. It’s not much more than some patches of dirt and grass in a large fenced in enclosure with a separate run for smaller dogs but everyone there is always friendly and the dogs do what they do- just play.  It’s on 29th Ave. behind the Rec Center.  That’s closest to my house so it’s my favorite. But there are dog parks all over the area.  I will say if you are ever new in town anywhere, a dog park is an instant ice breaker. There’s always a conversation starter when you’re surrounded by playing dogs.

The IOP park is closest to where I live, but there are several area dog parks.  James Island County Park (there is a lake area for the dogs), Wannamaker County Park in North Charleston, and Palmetto Islands Park in Mt. Pleasant each have dog friendly areas.  I’ve never lived in such a pet friendly city before!

Nothing beats the beach though. I have never seen a happier dog than a dog that gets a few miles out and smells the salt water and suddenly is aware of where he/she’s going. THAT is a happy dog.

*Every beach has its own policy about dogs- there are leash laws, hours of dog friendliness, necessary dog licenses, etc. and only a few of our rental properties are pet friendly so check before your bring your dog.

Short Sale…no thanks. Just show me a motivated seller.

Everybody wants a deal, and now is the time.  Don’t believe it’s the time to buy Real Estate yet?  I disagree.

I must admit as a Realtor I may sound somewhat biased, but I practice what I preach.  I’m a Buyer myself.  I’ve purchased 3 homes myself in the last 2 years and tried for a fourth just last week losing out on a home that had 6 offers on it within days of coming on the market.  Are you thinking that must have been a good deal?  It was.  1600 square foot ranch home on James Island in a great neighborhood (mine in fact).  List price…$99,000.  Not a short sale.  Not bank owned.  It was an estate sale being executed by an attorney.  Motivated Seller.

I avoid short sales. When I hear short sale,  I think headaches and heartbreak for almost everyone involved.  You can find a deal that way.  And if you really love a property in a short sale situation, I would definitely attempt to purchase it via short sale first.  But in my experience, you still may be paying more than you need to… but that’s a conversation for another day.

Motivated Sellers come in all forms and I do my homework to find them.  I watch bank owned and estate sales.  I watch for multiple reductions in a short period of time.  I watch for major reductions.  But these are not the only telling factors.  People need to sell for all kinds of reasons…job transfer, loss of job, marriage, divorce, kids, up-sizing, downsizing, graduation, retirement, travel, health reasons and yes, financial reasons.  These motivating factors happen in any market.

Here are some examples of the motivated sellers I’ve found for my buyer clients in the last 6 months:

Downtown Charleston – 1025 sq ft house with 2 off street parking spots and a yard. 1 block from Marion Square and steps off Calhoun .
Purchased for $190,000 – Tax appraisal valued the land alone at $228,000. Bank owned multiple offer situation.
(Link to listing – 2912368)

Folly Beach – Full .24 acre street to street lot with main house of 1500 sq ft and two 1 bedroom cottages on same property. 3 blocks to the beach.
Purchased for $360,000 – 3rd lowest residential purchase on Folly Beach in the last 3 years. Estate sale multiple offer situation.
(Link to listing – 2902489)

Mariners Cay – 2 bedroom, 2-story condo with views overlooking Folly River and the Marina
Purchased for $215,000 – Lowest priced purchase in Mariners Cay the last 5 years. Motivated out of town Seller.
(Link to listing – 2906274)

James Island – 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1528 sq ft ranch home in Lighthouse Point
Purchased for $120,000 – Bank owned property multiple offer situation.
(Link to Listing – 2828792)

West Ashley – 2 bedroom, 1 bath single family home in Parkwood Estates
Purchased for $101,000 – Bank owned property multiple offer situation.
(Link to Listing – 2921950)

There ARE deals out there.  When they are this good, they don’t last more than a few days and sometimes they are under contract in hours. I can notify my clients within minutes of them coming on the market.   I’m not a salesman. I present my clients with the facts, the comparable sales and they decide for themselves. The Charleston area is full of deals, and I can help find them.  Feel free to call or contact me with questions.
